Marinade
I’m white, the consequence of genetic mutation,
gene slc24a5 determines my pigmentation.
Caucasian. And marinated in racism.
from ‘Marinade’

Marinade is a poetic, autobiographical short film made in collaboration with filmmaker Oliver Parkin. The film explores the layered experience of Ashkenazi Anglo-Jewish identity and the entanglements of Second-Generation identity, racism and antisemitism. Through spoken word poetry, personal storytelling, animation and Super 8 footage, I trace how racism seeped into my mind, shaping the ways I see myself and others.
The film reflects on growing up in a society where antisemitism and racial hierarchy coexisted and where ‘safety’ for white Jews was often negotiated through silence, assimilation and complicity in anti-Black racism.
The subject matter of Marinade demands honesty, accountability and discomfort. At the core of the film is a belief that personal transformation is both possible and necessary - that the wellbeing of white Jews is deeply bound up with the work of building genuine connection and solidarity across historically-imposed divides.
The film’s soundscape features music by Klezmer Klub, Randolph Matthews and Garsaaidi.
Marinade has screened at Folkestone Documentary Film Festival, Warsaw Jewish Film Festival, Austin Texas Jewish Film Festival and Punte Del Este Jewish Film Festival, where it won Best Documentary.
